Comitan is smaller, less abrasive and perhaps a little less exciting than San Cristobal de las Casas but it gets you closer to the border of Guatemala and it was our preferred resting point. Getting from Palenque to Guatemala is a long and treachorous journey — one you can make overnight if you take the late bus to San Cristobal. But we were able to stay on budget and get all the way from Palenque to Comitan for a good nights rest and stay on budget.
There are is a lovely square with nicely pruned foliage, lots of sculptures and beautiful lighting at night. The streets are clean and after staying one night here, we agree this place most likely demands two to fully enjoy all it has to offer.
