Sunshine Hotel

Sunshine Hotel is perfect for the budget traveler who still prefers some luxuries (read: air conditioning, doors that lock, clean and private bathrooms, electricity).

The rooms are very clean and comfortable; each with its own air conditioning unit and private bathroom. A room with one double bed costs $25usd and two double beds cost $35usd. As always, ask about discounts for multiple nights.

Sunshine is a small trek to the beach, but for the amenities it might be worth it to some people. Just remember, the island loses power frequently and fuel shortages might preclude the back-up generator as well — just something to keep in mind if you are really counting on the AirCon.

Three Brothers

Three Brothers may have a few strikes against it — set inland and a decent walk from the beach side, but what it lacks in location, it makes up for in affordability.

Pretty basic, Three Brothers has 17 rooms, all a little different — some have private bathrooms, varying amounts of beds, windows, and the like. The prices range from $10 to $25 a night depending on the amenities. Be sure to have a look at all the available rooms, because they do differ greatly in terms of comfort and especially breeze. Located inland, this place can get hot — but fans are included. There is also a kitchen on premise for guest use.

And don’t be afraid to barter a little bit. Three Brothers is definitely open to discounting a week’s stay, or longer. It never hurts to ask!Click to view slideshow.

Pacha Mama

Pacha Mama is a great place for trampers looking for a little party atmosphere and a good group vibe. The beds are cheap enough at $8usd for a dorm bed with fans, $20usd for a private double. Breakfast is included on the weekend mornings. The hostel has wi-fi and a kitchen for use, as well as surfboard rentals and shuttles to the neighboring beaches for $5usd return trip.

Pacha Mama is a perfectly located, super close to the beach and right around the corner from the main strip of bars and restaurants. For the price — this place is a great choice, awesome vibe, lots of breeze and perfect central location.

Ometepe to San Juan del Sur

Once you get off the $2usd / 35 cord ferry ride from Ometepe to the mainland you will have a couple options: You can grab a taxi to the bus depot in San Jorge, this should cost no more than $1.50usd — haggling will be required. Then you can hop on a chicken bus to San Juan del Sur for about $2usd / 40 cords. Or if you prefer a more luxurious ride, of course you can meet some friends on the ferry and procure an air-conditioned taxi that will cost somewhere around $4-5usd per person, depending on your bargaining skills. The journey only takes about an hour, so the chicken bus is, as it usually is, the best bet.

Casa Oro

Casa Oro is a fabulous place to lay over while in San Juan del Sur. The best draw here is happy hour on the rooftop bar. It’s breezy, there are hammocks, always good vibes and generally good music to go with the 2 for 1 drinks. There are several room options here, from dorms for $8usd with fans to $10usd with air conditioning and also private rooms that can work out to under $10usd depending on how many are in your group. Make sure you ask what all your options are when you arrive — you could miss out on a great deal. There are lockers to secure your things and a kitchen for guest use, as well as movies and a big screen with cable for lazy nights or rainy days. Breakfast is included here too — although a lot of the people end up missing it because they were out until sunrise partying.

Juayua food festival

This is the reason you come to Juayua. Every weekend, the usually subdued streets of Juayua turn into a veritable feast for all the senses, and especially, the most important of the five senses: taste. The restaurants from the town wheel out their open fire grills, and food carts full of all the fixings.

Beers cost a dollar and you can fill up on a plate of steaks, ribs, deer or rabbit — and it’s all delicious. Served with rice, beans, tortillas, salad; everything you could want. We went with friends and shared a variety of dishes, a recommended strategy for a top-notch experience.

There were rumors that you could even try iguana meat here — we asked all the vendors. Most balked, some said “Oh si, es delicioso” but nobody could tell us where to find it. Que lastima! But the costillas (ribs) and bambi meat was probably better anyway.
