Eating Placencia

JDee’s Restaurant

Giant burritos can be one of the best food deals you find in Belize. Some restaurants are selling them for upwards of $7.50usd ($15BZE), but at some of the more modest local joints, you can swing it. Placencia eating is delicious and affordable.

JDee’s has giant burritos, plenty enough to share between two people, for a reasonable price too. The fresh fish burrito was stuffed with beans, cheese, rice and veggies for $6usd ($12BZE) and the chicken, beef and veggie burritos are all under $5usd ($10BZE).

They also won’t mind that you bring your own drink in with you either.

Placencia was the kind of place you end up spending a week and not really knowing where the time went. But it’s not super affordable. At Lydia’s Guest House there is a kitchen available and there are some decent buys at some of the various super markets in town.

It’s tough to get by on $20usd a day in Belize, but it helps if you can find a place with some semblance of a kitchen. And if not, this is where packing some heat can come in handy. We have a single burner fold-up camp stove to cook with, and it made all the difference to our budget.

You can get chicken, onions, canned tomatoes and beans and make a decent stew — stew chicken is the staple food in this country anyway.

There is a small farmers market where you can pick up some fruit for breakfast, and most any of the markets will sell johnny cakes for $.25usd ($.50BZE) a piece (in lieu of the typical tortillas you’ve been eating everywhere else).

Another penny-pinching tip is to switch from beer to rum. The beer in this country is expensive ($1.50usd/bottle) and the selection is minimal (Belikin). Rum is delicious (One Barrel is our favorite) and for under $6usd you can get a 750ml bottle, some juice concentrate (called squash) and make a delicious rum punch on the beach.
