Getting // Going: San Pedro Sula

Rio Dulce (Guatemala) >> San Pedro Sula >> La Ceiba >> Bay Islands

Leaving Rio Dulce, it’s not difficult to get into Honduras. Buses leave the Fuente del Norte station every morning at 10 am for $17.50usd (135 quetzales) and it takes about 5 hours.

From San Pedro Sula you can grab the last bus to La Ceiba, which leaves at 4pm and costs $5.20usd (100 lempiras). The bus terminal at San Pedro Sula is the largest in Central America, and it’s obvious. As soon as you get off the bus you will have a crowd of men shouting town names, just listen for the ones yelling, “CEIBA” and they will direct you straight to the platform where you can buy your tickets and fight for a good seat. There has been a series of robberies on the buses so you may want to pay the added cost of the Direct non-stop Hedmanalas bus which cost $19 US and is considered safer. Furthermore if you arrive at the San Pedro Sula Airport late at night and are going to the bus station, you should stay in the airport until almost 5am since the bus station doesn’t open until then. You would be standing outside in a bad part of town with your luggage, not a good idea.  There is normally a food stand open all night at the airport.

The ride to La Ceiba will take about 3 hours, barring any breakdowns.

The ferries to the islands leave in the morning and early afternoon. To Utila, the ticket will cost $25usd (472 lempiras). The boat to Roatan is more luxurious, takes a bit longer and costs a little more, just under $30usd (524 lempiras).

San Pedro Sula >> Lago de Yojoa

Getting to Lago de Yojoa from the massive San Pedro Sula bus terminal is not only simple but cheap! You just have to follow the signs, or ask direction, to the urban/interurban bus lines and find the bus going to El Mochito — but you’ll only be going to Los Naranjos. For about $2usd/40 lemps you’ll get there in about 2 hours.

There is not a lot going on in the town, but if you plan on staying at D&D Brewery, tell the driver and they will drop you at the access road. D&D is no more than a 5 minute walk from there.

If you intend on staying at The Hideaway you’ll get off the bus in Peña Blanca (before Los Naranjos) and grab a colectivo toward the archaeological park and get off at “dos pinos” to walk up the short drive to the bed and breakfast.
