Sleeping: Comitan

Comitan is a great town to visit. However, it’s not a town that feels accustomed to mochileros (backpackers). Thus, while there are some great hotels that can cost $15 USD or more a night, finding options under $10 USD that are comfortable for several nights,is a little more of a challenge. (For one night only, we can sleep just about anywhere….) We haven’t yet found a place with a kitchen for guests, for example,  and we were told it’s just not the norm here. Drinking water, or agua pura, was also not included in any of the places we checked out. But, for a place to sleep, you can find several options under $10 USD. These will usually just include a simple bed and shared bathroom.

(TRAMPER TIP: After spending many more weeks in Mexico, we realize that we need to take our first impression into account. Coming from Guatemala, paying more than $10 USD for a room felt like throwing money away. But if you have traveled any closer to Cancun, you’ll likely pay that amount or more for a dorm bed. Take this in to consideration. We’ve listed the budget options here, as that’s what we were searching for. But if you want more comfort, you can easily find it in Comitan for a little extra cash.)

On the 1a Avenida Norte Poniente, for example, there are several budget options, and the coziest that we’ve found is Posada Las Flores. The others on the same street offer similar prices, but lack somewhat in charm and comfort. Closer to Central Park, the rates go up. And once you get three to four blocks from Central Park, the rates become more competitive. There are a couple of options for Hospedajes on the 3rd Calle North Poniente, near Restaurant El Jardin, that could be worth checking out. We will continue to be on the lookout for tramper-friendly lodging in Comitan. And if you have any updates for us, send them our way, and we will be happy to add the information!

Hospedaje Montebello

A comfortable budget option, Montebello has several rooms that line a sunny, open courtyard. The rooms are basic, but several of them are large. For one person, the single with shared bath is one of the cheapest options we’ve seen. If taking a taxi from the main terminal, be sure to not get Hospedaje Montebello, which is located near the Central Park, confused with Hotel Lagos de Montebello, located further from town.

Posada Las Flores

Out of all the posadas we checked out on 1a Avenida, this one was tops — though still without drinking water, or a kitchen. There is a quaint and welcoming open-air courtyard surrounded by private rooms. Rooms surrounding the courtyard get more natural light, but can get more noise also. The rooms further back, and closer to the bathroom, don’t receive daylight and can be great if you want to sleep in, or prefer more privacy.  The staff is very friendly and welcoming, and to our liking, WIFI was available. Once cleaned, the bathrooms were in good condition, including hot water.

RATES:

Standard double, two beds, shared bath, one person – 90pesos ($7 USD)

Standard double, two beds, shared bath, two people – 140 pesos ($10.75 USD)

This posada leaves a little to be desired, but the rates are a great find for two people. There is a kitchen that could be open to guests, however there is no wi-fi. Be sure to check for rooms upstairs, because they can be a little better with nice windows and fresher air.

RATES:

For one or two people:

Standard double, shared bath –  100 pesos ($7.70 USD)

Standard double, private bath – 140 pesos ($10.75 USD)

Hotel Rio Escondido

At Rio Escondido, you have both a hospedaje, and hotel. While rooms in the hospedaje are the cheapest we’ve seen, the shared bathroom isn’t something we’d want to make use of. Prices in the hospedaje are 50pesos/person/night (under $4 USD). In the hotel above, the rooms are much more charming, come with towels, a private bath, and TV. See rates below. Also, WIFI is available in the lobby.

RATES:

1 person, private bath in hotel: 200 pesos (around $15.50 USD)

2 people, private bath in hotel: 250 pesos ($19.25 USD)

Here, the rooms are tiny, and the beds not anything to brag about, but for two people, the price isn’t bad. Also, if traveling solo, and wanting to save some cash, you can ask if there is a single with shared bath available, and it should only cost around 70 pesos ($5.40 USD).

RATES:

Room with private bath for one or two people: 140 pesos ($10.75 USD)

Standard double, two beds, private bath –  200 pesos (around $15 USD)

Extra person – 50 pesos ($3.85 USD)

Hostal Don Quijote

More Photos of Don Quijote

Don Quijote is a great find in Comitan. It’s a very charming and comfortable hostal, with a large flamingo-decorated indoor courtyard. Most of the rooms are on the second floor. All are spacious, and offer private bathrooms, and WIFI is available. If you are looking for comfort, still on a budget, Don Quijote is a good find for the price. Specifically, if you are traveling with someone you can share a bed with, the matrimonial beds are the best price. And like the others, it’s very near the Central Park.

Prices

Single room: 150 pesos ($11.50 USD)

Double with two beds: 250 pesos ($19.25 USD)

Matrimonial (2 people, one bed): 200 pesos ($15.40)

FInally, Posada Casa Lupita has reasonable rates for rooms as well. Though their website advertises a single room with private bath at 150 pesos, we were quoted 100 pesos. So it might be worth asking before you arrive.

Single with shared bath: 100 pesos/night ($7.70 USD)

Single with Private bath: 150 pesos ($11.50)

Two People, shared bath: 180 pesos ($13.85 USD)

One thought on “Sleeping: Comitan

  1. thanks so much for the info you share on your page! i’m in comitan right now and wanted to update some info. i checked out hotel rio escondido and boy was it disappointing–at least for the economic options. they showed me a 100 pesos/night room and it looked like cinderella should be living there. there was another option at 150 pesos/night and i couldn’t bring myself to stay there either–it seemed like a dank closet no one had stayed in for a while. so i checked out hospedaje montebello close by and the open sunny courtyard won me over. the rooms feel bright b/c of this and the shared bathroom wasn’t bad at all. saul who works here is friendly and super helpful. and the room is only 100 pesos/night. oh and they have free drinking water and wifi. i highly recommend it as an economic option!

Have you been? Are you going? Tell us about it!
