When we walked into this hostel it had only been open two weeks — and it is certainly a welcome addition to the hostel scene here in el centro de Tulum. The skeleton of the building existed but most everything you see in Hikuri was built by the owner Santiago and his partner — they also live there currently, a good testament to the quality of the hostel. The decor is very artistic and each room has its own unique original design and painting. There is a fantastic terrace bar and sitting area on the roof and also a kitchen for guest use. Every room has air conditioning and the private rooms also have a ceiling fan. Since the place just opened, owner Santiago is still in the process of having wifi available throughout — at the moment you can only connect in the reception area. And if you’re traveling as a group make sure to ask about some pricing options with the different rooms available; Hikuri is open to negotiating so that everyone is comfortable in his hostel-come-art-gallery.

RATES:

Dorm bed with bathroom, air conditioning and locker – $14.25usd/$180 pesos

Private double room with two beds, bathroom, air conditioning and fan – $35.50usd/$450 pesos

NOTE: THE WEARY TRAVELER HAS MOVED (North of the Bus station and one block west New info coming soon.)

There are few hostels that are as well-known on the traveler’s circuit as The Weary Traveler in Tulum. Maybe it’s because it’s right next door to the bus station, but this hostel also has a lot appeal aside from location. For just over $11usd (150pesos) you get a bed, breakfast and a return trip to the beach. Plus plenty of fellow trampers to mingle with on the open-air patio or hammock garden.

And in the evening this place hosts free salsa lessons, circus performers and music to go along with the drink specials at the bar (if you have the budget for the bar, prices are lower than most restaurants).

When a taxi will run $3-4usd, getting to the beach from the centro can be a sure budget buster. And of course, if you are in Tulum, the beach is the place to be. There are two morning rides to the beach and two times in the afternoon to get back into town. If you miss it, you’re on your own. Fair enough.

Breakfast is decent too, your choice of eggs, pancakes, french toast or cereal that you cook up yourself on a big cook top on the patio. And with it being so centrally located you can get anything else you would need or want easily.

Wi-fi is available here too. Use the code HR72557 when checking out to get a 5% discount on your bill.

RATES:
Single dorm bed, fan — $150pesos/$11.75usd
Single dorm bed, air conditioning — $175pesos/$13.75usd
Private double room, air conditioning — $450pesos/$35.35usd

Chavez Campin

With the influx of resorts along the pristine beaches on Tulum in recent years, the budget options have become few and far between. We were thrilled to find Chavez Camping on our most recent pass through. With a kitchen and durable tee-pee like tents available for rent under $100pesos/$7.85usd this place is a dream. Right on the beach, plenty of hammocks, plenty of shade, plenty of relaxation. To arrive at Chavez Camping you can either taxi it from town, or catch the colectivo that only costs $10pesos/$.75usd. The colectivo runs from the central park to the beach hotel zone regularly from 6:30am through 7:30pm daily.

RATES:
A private tent, with small bed — $100pesos/$7.85usd
Hammock or camping space for your own tent — $75pesos/$5.90usd

The cabañas that stretch more than a mile down Tulum’s beach front vary in price and quality. Mostly, they will cost upwards of $15usd per person, and that’s so long as you have at least two people sleeping in them. But if you’re lucky, you can get in at Mar Caribe for $10usd a person — in one of the two more rustic cabañas they have here.

Mostly the cabañas are set up on stilits, have two beds with mosquito nets. However, there are two that have survived the hurricanes of the past and still stand. They are closest to the beach, get plenty of breeze, but not quite as much luxury. One bed, sand floors, and holes in the thatch roofs. But hey, you’re sleeping on one of the most incredible beaches, with a view straight out to the sea and an unbelievable amount of stars above your head.

And remember that it costs almost $3usd (40pesos) to get to town, so going to the grocery and buying some groceries for your time staying at the beach is highly recommended. The restaurants on the beach have high prices, and typically aren’t worth the splurge.

If it’s a cabaña you want and you’re on the tramping budget — Mar Caribe is the place to go.

Note: There are a few showers and toilets located near the restaurant for guest use. Not the cleanest, but they suffice if you’re not too highfalutin about these things.
