Getting // Going: Valladolid

Isla Holbox >> Tzimin >> Valladolid/Merida

If you are an early riser, you can catch the first ferry of the day at 5 am out of Isla Holbox and get a direct bus from the port town of Chiquila to Valladolid. While we do like to get an early start on the day, 5 am was a little early for us. So we hopped the 7 am ferry and went straight on to the bus bound for Tizimin (There is also a bus from the 1pm ferry). A second class bus from Chiquila to Tizimin cost $5usd/$70 pesos and took around 2 hours. Once in Tizimin you have to go around the corner to the other bus terminal and catch the bus to Valladolid for $27 pesos. You could also catch a bus to Merida from Tizimin for $6.25usd/$85 pesos.

The other option from Isla Holbox is to catch a colectivo to El Ideal, which is at the crossroads between Cancun and Valladolid. From the small tent in El Ideal, which serves as the bus station, you should easily be able to catch a bus headed to Valladolid for around P$50.

Valladolid Bus Schedule, February 2014

Getting to Merida, Cancun, or Playa Del Carmen is easy. Buses all leave frequently. And as there is only one bus station in Valladolid, it’s even easier. Find the station on Calle 39, between Calles 44 and 46.

Second class buses will save a little cash, and it some cases they run more frequently than the first class, ADO buses.

The second-class buses are comfortable and most often have air conditioning. You may notice people crowding the door to the bus platforms before being called; if you want to ensure a seat, it’s important to get up front. On second-class buses it is not uncommon to oversell the seats, so you may be standing the entire ride — especially if you need to take the time to stow your luggage.
