Perfectly situated on the beach in Santo Domingo, Buena Vista is an ideal place to stay while on Ometepe. It’s quiet, the beach is calm and peaceful and the views of the volcanoes are inspiring.

Rooms are private with bathrooms and fans and cost $10usd per person. Make sure you ask to see all the available rooms, because the views and set-up vary one to the other. The staff here serves breakfast each morning, but it’s cheaper to go next door to Comedor Gloriana.

Finca Magdalena

Settled into the base of the majestic Volcan Maderas, Finca Magdalena is a perfect place to stay if you’re looking for serenity, quiet and relaxation. The plantation is composed of the original stable-style buildings with an enormous covered porch that looks down the mountain and out over the lake — breathtaking, of course. There are also more cabins situated throughout the wonderfully landscaped property teeming with wildflowers and almond trees.

A dorm bed, that is as basic as it gets, in the main building costs only $4usd, but don’t expect much from the room. A private one bed with shared bathroom costs $6. private cabin with one double bed and private bathroom costs $20usd, shared bathroom costs $10usd.

The nicest place at Finca Magdalena is the private cabin. There are 3 beds, a private bathroom and an incredible front porch overlooking the lake that costs $40usd. Extra beds will cost $5usd.

There is no wi-fi here, but there are computers with internet you can use. Nor is there a kitchen, however there is a restaurant with reasonably priced meals. And you always walk the the kilometer down the hill to the town of Balgue where there are other dining options.

Hospedaje Soma

Set right up the hill and down the road from the port in Moyogalpa, Hospedaje Soma is a fabulous retreat ran by a very friendly and hospitable German ex-pat.

The prices vary but there are certainly budget-friendly options here worth checking out. The dorm rooms are clean and spacious, and each bed is assigned a very large locker with an outlet for safely charging electronics while you’re out. Clever!

The private rooms were fantastically spacious, with bathrooms and plenty of room for an extra bed, if you need it.

If you are able to upgrade, the private rooms will save you some costs in the end since you get a free continental breakfast each night you stay there. The menu varies depending on what’s available — but the offerings we saw looked delicious.

Dinners are prepared and offered daily as well for just $6-7usd/150 cords. There is wi-fi here and depending on demand you might be able to swing a promotion like the three nights for the price of two that was happening when we stopped by in late May.

Private room with double bed and shared bath – $22
Private room with double bed and private bath – $29

  1. I just came from Ometepe a few days ago. The best place to stay is Hostal Ibesa, a family-run place. It’s in Moyogalpa, after coming from the docks, turn right at the gas station, then walk 1,5 blocks and it’s on your left. Why is it the best? It’s probably THE ONLY place on the island that lets you use the kitchen 🙂 the dorm is 5 USD, they also have private rooms with pr.bathrooms.

Have you been? Are you going? Tell us about it!
