Santa Fe

If you like hiking, ATVs, free-range livestock, and mountain culture, go to Santa Fe. Set about 60 kilometers north of Santiago, the town itself can be explored in an afternoon. However, to really get a hold on the area could take a week or more. Nestled amongst beautiful mountains and surrounded by rivers and waterfalls galore, this town exudes the kind of local flavor that is hard to find in some of the more well-known tourist destinations. There is one hostel, a smattering of hotels (mostly out of reach for the average tramper), and a couple of small restaurants. There is no ATM, so be sure to bring cash.  The cooperative market near the center sells local produce and handicrafts, and is a good place to ask about nearby trails.
