Eating : San Pedro

Gringolandia: (Or, the main tourist streets in town)

San Pedro, like San Marcos, has many tourist-supported dining options, catering to foreign taste buds. German, Italian, Asian… you’ll find it all. Vegetarian? Absolutely! Gluten-free? Surprisingly, yes. Near Hotel Pinocchio, The Idea Connection offers pastas, paninis, pastries, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They also have an in-house internet cafe, as well as free WIFI in the restaurant. The Buddha Bar has a little of everything: wraps, apps, curries, pad-thai, as well as typical Guatemalan dishes, and of course, the Buddha Burger. And then our favorite, Home Cafe, is a health-nut’s dream come true. They even offer a “Delicate Tummy Menu” for those who may be suffering slightly for past dining choices. All of these options run around Q35 ($4.50) and up for a main course, though cheaper options are on the menu.

Street Meat:

If you’re pinching pennies in San Pedro, you won’t go hungry, though for some options you’ll have to wander away from the tourist drag. For example, The Market, uptown on the same street as BanRural, and beside the Catholic Church, is always a great option for cheap eats. Fresh produce abounds, if you’ll be cooking for yourself. And here also for just Q10-Q20 you’ll find plates of food ready to eat, as delicious as los mercados across the country. For other shopping, you’ll find different items different days of the week. La Paca (the used clothes Market) is on certain days, flowers, another. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, ask if it might be offered on a different day. Saturdays and Sundays however, are always a good bet.

3x12 Tacos!

3×12 Tacos!

Sticking to the main tourist drag, you’ll find at least two taco joints, offering 3xQ12: 3 tacos for Q12 ($1.50). It’s street meat under a roof. You’ll find street eats on the main drag as well, though they are sparse while the sun is in the sky. Options increase after dark.

Finally, on the main drag, D Juice Girls run a killer liquado (smoothie) stand. All the smoothies are made with fresh fruit, and the combinations are endless. Prices are Q10 and up.

Budget Meals:

Solar Pools Restaurant San Pedro Guatemala (9)

Solar Pools Restaurant Menu and Photos

Next door to the Buddha bar, the Solar Pools Restaurant offers breakfasts: tipico-style (with bread instead of tortillas), crepes, pancakes, cornflakes… ranging from Q16 ($2 USD) to Q30 ( under $4 USD). The tipico comes with an awesome guacamole. Lunch, pizzas, and beers are served as well.

Headed up the hill from the Santiago Dock, past the alley for Joyas Del Sol, is a small place with a sign out front advertising lunch and dinner options for Q18 and up.  They even offer vegetarian taco options, at 3xQ10. It’s your standard meat, rice, salad meal, with a healthy portion of rice. The menu stays the same here, with the few options that are listed on the board. But the food is good, and the prices can’t be beat.

And up the hill from the Panajachel Dock, on the corner of the first street on your left is a small space, basically under a tarp, where you can purchase cheap eats for lunch or dinner. Options are around Q20 or less.

Cafe Christalina is a slightly larger restaurant and coffee shop. You’ll find it on your left as you continue up the hill. They have excellent coffee, and breakfasts and lunch options starting at Q20. WIFI is available here as well.
