Getting // Going : San Pedro

Around the Lake

San Pedro >>> Santiago

From the main tourist streets in town, if you’re facing the lake, you’ll head to your right to reach the Santiago dock. The main road eventually widens enough for a car to travel, and then ends at the road leading downhill to the Santiago dock. From the market in town, head uphill towards the BanRural Bank, and you’ll cut downhill to your left to head to the dock.

The boats to Santiago leave about every 20/30 minutes, and the last is at 4pm. The cost is Q25.

San Pedro >>> Panajachel

To get to Panajachel, or any of the towns between San Pedro and Panajachel, head to the the Pana Dock. Again, the main tourist street ends at the road to the Dock. If facing the lake, head left. There should be a direct boat to Panajachel (around Q25) and a boat that will stop at the other towns along the way. Let the captain know where you’re headed so you can be sure you’re on the right boat.

San Pedro >>> San Juan

You can take a boat from the Panajachel Dock to reach San Juan, but you can also catch a pick-up. In the main part of town, head for the Catholic Church. In front you’ll see the chicken buses, and in front of those will be pick-ups for San Juan. They leave every 15-20min, though sometimes the driver will wait for extra passengers if there are only a couple people. The cost is around Q2-Q3, and the curvy, downhill, roller-coaster like descent into San Juan is worth every centavo.

And if you don’t mind the bumps, you can catch a tuk-tuk as well, for around Q20.

Far and Away

San Pedro >>> Guatemala City or Quetzaltenango

Buses for either city also leave from in front of the Catholic Church in San Pedro. The cost is around Q30-Q35. There will be a several buses a day for either city, but your best bet is getting an early start. On weekends buses run less frequently.

And, finally, a number of tourist agencies in town offer shuttle services to all the major tourist cities.
