Getting // Going : Rio Dulce

Rio Dulce >> San Pedro Sula >> La Ceiba >> Bay Islands

Leaving Rio Dulce, it’s not difficult to get into Honduras. Buses leave the Fuente del Norte station every morning at 10 am for $17.50usd (135 quetzales) and it takes about 5 hours.

From San Pedro Sula you can grab the last bus to La Ceiba, which leaves at 4pm and costs $5.20usd (100 lempiras). The bus terminal at San Pedro Sula is the largest in Central America, and it’s obvious. As soon as you get off the bus you will have a crowd of men shouting town names, just listen for the ones yelling, “CEIBA” and they will direct you straight to the platform where you can buy your tickets and fight for a good seat.

The ride to La Ceiba will take about 3 hours, barring any breakdowns.

The ferries to the islands leave in the morning and early afternoon. To Utila, the ticket will cost $25usd (472 lempiras). The boat to Roatan is more luxurious, takes a bit longer and costs a little more, just under $30usd (524 lempiras).

Take me back to the TOP

Rio Dulce >> Livingston

From Rio Dulce, there are three ways to get to Livingston: A $16usd (125 quetzales) boat up the river straight from the Rio Dulce docks to the docks in Livingston at the mouth of the Caribbean, a $3usd (24 quetzales) colectivo from Rio Dulce to Puerto Barrios, or a $3.85usd (30 quetzales) bus to Puerto Barrios, changing in Morales.

From Puerto Barrios you can catch a boat to Livingston for either $1.90usd (15 quetzales) or $3.85usd (30 quetzales) depending on the time you leave and the speed of the boat.

The riverboat is a nice tour, but hardly worth the difference in price. The boat from Puerto Barrios would be the preferred method for tramp-traveling.

Lanquin >> Rio Dulce

From Lanquin you can book shuttles to Flores, Rio Dulce and Antigua all for right around $20usd. The rides are bumpy and take several hours, but that’s the price you pay to explore the amazing nature you came to see (or are coming to see) in Semuc Champey. You can also grab a bus to Coban for around $7usd (50 quetzales) and from there you can find local buses to other destinations. Coban is about 2 or 3 hours from Lanquin depending on the condition of the roads that day.
