Finca Magdalena

Settled into the base of the majestic Volcan Maderas, Finca Magdalena is a perfect place to stay if you’re looking for serenity, quiet and relaxation. The plantation is composed of the original stable-style buildings with an enormous covered porch that looks down the mountain and out over the lake — breathtaking, of course. There are … Continue reading »

El Portal

Located at the entrance to Semuc Champey, El Portal  is supremely located. There are dorm style cabanas you can get for $5usd (40 quetzales). The location is premium, but you do make some sacrifices — such as being at the mercy of the park restaurant. The restaurant isn’t overly expensive, but it certainly won’t help … Continue reading »

El Retiro Lodge

CAUTIONARY NOTE: El Retiro is a beautiful lodge in a beautiful setting and we genuinely enjoyed our stay here. However we do stress the importance of using the lockers provided in reception. And don’t be surprised if you feel like the bags you left in your room have been rifled through. Cash seems to be the … Continue reading »

Day 1 hazing — Crickets, Mexico’s delicacy

We woke up this Wednesday morning in a small one room home in the jungle of Puerto Morelos. Surveying the surrounding book cases I noticed an enormous vegetarian cookbook. “Are you a vegetarian?” I asked him With a twinge of guilt for being unable to embrace a non-meat lifestyle he responded, “No, I thought about it for a … Continue reading »

Surviving Guatemala in the rainy season — All you need is luck

Waking up in Huehuetenango, wrapped tight in my own blanket so as not to touch the sheets or pillow of the bed I was sleeping on, I could tell by the dim grey light that it was still dreary and rainy outside. Fine by me. We would be on a bus most of the day … Continue reading »

The Jungle

Out of the three, The Jungle has the most unique and artistic cabañas — which enhances the appeal of staying here.  Take me back to PALENQUE. RATES: Cabaña, one person, private bathroom, balcony – $11.15usd ($150 pesos) Cabaña, two people, private bathroom, balcony – $13.35usd ($180 pesos) Cabaña, one person, shared bathroom – $5.95usd ($80 … Continue reading »

Cabañas el Jaguar

These cabañas are the most rustic of the three with very small, screened-in cabañas that barely fit two single beds or one double bed inside.  Take me back to PALENQUE. RATES: Standard cabaña, one person, shared bath – $5.20usd ($70 pesos) Cabaña, two people, private bath – $11.15usd ($150 pesos)

Margarita and Ed’s Cabañas

The offerings at Margarita and Ed’s  vary from rustic cabañas like you’ll find at the other places as well as more modern ones with tile and new furnishings. There are also rooms available in the main house.  Take me back to PALENQUE. RATES: Cabaña, two people, private bathroom – $18.50usd ($250 pesos) Cabaña, three people, … Continue reading »

El Mono Blanco del Panchan

This little restaurant has fairly decent drink offers, if you’re stuck in the jungle and haven’t made it to town to pick up some beer from a minisuper or liquor store. A liter of cervesa sells for $2.60usd ($35 pesos) and you can get two-for-one margaritas for $3.70usd ($50 pesos) total.  Take me back to … Continue reading »

Don Muchos

This restaurant is located at Margarita and Ed’s Cabañas and a good place to lay down a few extra dollars if you’re staying in El Panchan. It’s certainly not as budget-friendly as picking up some food at the market or grocery in Palenque, but if you’ve got the cash to spend it’s not a bad … Continue reading »
