La Casa de la IguanaCentral_America_Budget_Cheap_Travel_Border_Tramp_Guatemala_Livingston_Casa_de_la_Iguana_1

Casa de la Iguana offers nearly everything you’d want in a hostel at an affordable price — just be warned that the “put it on my tab”-system used here is something to be mindful of.

The most notable cons of this place are the lack of kitchen use and that they do not allow you to bring your own alcoholic drinks in (though you can still try).

The rooms are clean and comfortable. There are shared bathrooms throughout the complex, only one of which has hot water (in the common building). Whether you opt for a  dorm or a private room, it is definitely worth the cost.

The staff here is composed of travelers from all over the world, and it shows that they know what travelers appreciate in a hostel. Beers are sold at a decent price and happy hour is as good a bargain as you’ll get anywhere (including mini supers). The dinners they cook up family style are delicious and arguably affordable ($5usd roughly). Just remember you can still get cheaper eats in town.

The Hostel gives each guest a tab which you settle at the end of your stay. So if you happen to be partying with the employees at the bar just know that during music trivia you aren’t actually winning the drinks — you will pay for them.

This hotel is perfectly situated on the main drag straight up the hill from the docks. The prices are great too. $19.25usd (150 quetzales) for a double room with private bath. There are also dorm beds available for just over $5usd (40 quetzales).

There is no wi-fi here, however.

Casa RosadaCentral_America_Budget_Cheap_Travel_Border_Tramp_Guatemala_Livingston_Casa_Rosada_1

If you’re traveling   with a partner, this is a gem of a hotel in Livingston. Listed at $20.50usd (160 quetzales) for a private double room with a shared bathroom, just by refusing the room we were offered a $1.25usd (10 quetzales) discount.

Casa Rosada is located on the water with a lovely pier boasting a restaurant. The place was very clean and we would have been happy to stay here. Wi-fi is also available here.
