Getting // Going: Utila

Rio Dulce >> San Pedro Sula >> La Ceiba >> Bay Islands

Leaving Rio Dulce, it’s not difficult to get into Honduras. Buses leave the Fuente del Norte station every morning at 10 am for $17.50usd (135 quetzales) and it takes about 5 hours.

From San Pedro Sula you can grab the last bus to La Ceiba, which leaves at 4pm and costs $5.20usd (100 lempiras) to $19.00 for 1st class.. The bus terminal at San Pedro Sula is the largest in Central America, and it’s obvious. As soon as you get off the bus you will have a crowd of men shouting town names, just listen for the ones yelling, “CEIBA” and they will direct you straight to the platform where you can buy your tickets and fight for a good seat. Some of the lower class buses have been being robbed so it may be worth the extra $13.00 for the 1st class Hedmanalas bus. The Hedmaalas also leaves at 6am so if you arrived by Spirit Air at 2am in the morning you can wait at the airport and take a cab to the bus station at 5am and catch the bus to La Ceiba. It’s nonstop and will get you there in time to catch the 9:30am ferry to Utila. Do not go to the bus station before 5am it will be closed and you will be standing outside in a very bad neighborhood.

The ride to La Ceiba will take about 3 hours, barring any breakdowns.

The ferries to the islands leave in the morning and early afternoon. To Utila, the ticket will cost $25usd (472 lempiras). The boat to Roatan is more luxurious, takes a bit longer and costs a little more, just under $30usd (524 lempiras).
