Sleeping: Campeche

Where to Sleep in Campeche…? Dorms here aren’t numerous, but we will share the options we’ve found in Campeche. For private rooms, Monkey Hostal II and La Pirata both are options, and prices are listed below. Additionally, P$250-P$300 is the starting rate for private rooms at the other lower-end hotels, making the options for two people traveling on a budget more numerous.

But, for those going alone, Campeche is not as much of a priority destination as places like Tulum, and Palenque. Thus, it’s not unlikely that you could find yourself alone in a dorm, in which case, you now have the largest room in the hostel, at the cheapest price, all to yourself. And it’s not that the hostel would be empty, just that traveling in pairs or groups is more common than traveling alone. Plus, two people can usually share a private room for less than the cost of two people in a dorm, so the dorms don’t fill up quickly. With that said, here are sleeping options in Campeche:

 Monkey Hostel II

(Note: If you’ve stayed at Monkey Hostel pre-2014, this is a new space with new ownership.) Located one block from the Plaza Principal, the location here is perfect. It isn’t a big space, however. There is a hallway between the small rooms that leads past the kitchen and onto a terrace, which serves as the common area and dining area. There are 6 dorm beds, and a few private rooms that all share a bathroom. With few people in the hostel you won’t have a problem, but expect to wait if the hostel is full. The kitchen, like others we’ve found in town, consists of your basics: Fridge and camp-stove with two burners, and minimal cookware and utensils. Plus, a microwave. There are small lockers available for those staying in a dorm. Luggage storage is available for the day for P$25, and water refills are P$6/liter. In the dorm there are two fans, and private rooms either have a balcony and a fan, or no balcony and AC. Prices are the same for either. While the dorm would feel crowded if full, the private rooms are more spacious and you get great light in the rooms with balconies.

Hostal La Pirata

Located on one of the main tourist streets in town, La Pirata offers private and dorm accommodations at reasonable prices. Here there is a mixed dorm, and a female-only.  The beds here are a little more worn than at the other locations, but the dorm rooms themselves are more spacious, and the bathrooms are inside the dorm. Additionally, the common area with outdoor tables surrounding the kitchen is a comfortable and laid back place to hang out, and the WIFI here is good. The kitchen has a camp-stove, fridge, and basic pots and pans. Enough to get by. Drinking water is provided, as is a simple breakfast of toast, cereal, coffee and fruit. Dorms have ceiling fans, a couple floor fans, and larger lockers for storage.

Viatger Inn

A new hostel in town, Viatger could easily become the new go-to for backpackers in Campeche, as the other places in town don’t always get the best reviews. Only dorm rooms are available, and while the price is a little higher than the other dorm options, like everything in the hostel, all the beds are new and comfortable, and each has a small light for reading (a nice touch.) There is a male-only, female-only, and mixed dorm, all with AC. While there is not much of a common area at present (it resembles a small lobby with a very large TV) a kitchen is under construction, and should be open in the spring of 2014. Right now coffee is offered to guests in the mornings. The bathrooms are also new, and drinking water is available for guests. WIFI is also available, and there is a computer for guest use. We’re anxious to see what the kitchen will look like. If you visit, let us know!
