Getting // Going: Comitan

Xela (Quetzaltenango) Guatemala >>> Comitan, Mexico

To reach Comitan from Xela, Guatemala, catch a bus from Xela to Huehuetenango (Q20 and about 2.5hours) and then a bus from Huehuetenango to the Guatemalan border town of La Mesilla (another Q20 and another 2-2.5 hours). In La Mesilla, you can cross into Mexico.

After crossing the border, you’ll need to head to nearby town of Cuauhtemoc. Before you do, you can change money with the money-changers hanging around the border, or head to the bank in Cuauhtemoc. (We were told by the immigration office that there isn’t an ATM in Cuauhtemoc, but if you are in need, check the bus station across the street from Immigration in Cuauhtemoc.)

A taxi from the border will take you to the Immigration Office in Cuauhtemoc. From here, the colectivo station to Comitan is just at the far end of the parking lot.

And for more detailed information, you can check out the Getting // Going Xela Page or view my story here.

Palenque >> San Cristobal >> Comitan

There are two stations in Palenque: The ADO station for first class travel and the economical first class station. Both buses boast first class, but the prices aren’t even comparable.

From ADO you can get to San Cristobal for $12usd ($160 pesos) and the bus is likely more comfortable than the economic option. However at $6.70usd ($90 pesos) you can get there just as fast — six hours. Both buses show movies, both have air conditioning and both have seat assignments, so it really depends on you and your budget, what you choose.

From the economical station buses leave for San Cristobal at:

07:45h 17:00h
09:30h                    22:45h
13:30h 23:00h

*There are buses leaving at 14:00h, 15:00h and 16:00 pm on Fridays as well.

Once in San Cristobal you can go straight from the bus into a colectivo and catch a ride to Comitan for $3usd ($40 pesos) and be there in an hour and a half.

  1. Hey, I’m in Comitan right now. I think I remember seeing a cash machine in Ciudad Cuauhtemoc inside the “bus station” across the highway from immigration (where the combis drop you off). Combis from the border to Comitan are m$40, and the price between Comitan and San Cristobal seems to have gone up to m$55 as of the first of the year.

    • Jayn, That would be great news, if there is a cash machine! I had only asked at Immigration, and was told there was not one. I didn’t make it to the bus station to check, just to the combi station next door. And you’re right… prices to San Cristobal just went up to $55. Where are you staying in Comitan? Are you just passing through for San Cristobal?

      • I’m at Posada Las Flores, where I saw your stickers, actually. I have a shopping list for friends on Lago Atitlan, so I came up for a couple days. The weather here is *much* nicer than San Cris. I think I might actually prefer it in Comitan.

        • The weather is warmer there, and the town is much quieter. I think I was there for 4 or 5 days, and on average saw one or two other tourists a day. But it’s a great spot for visiting some of the parks near by. Enjoy!
