Hostel & Camping Ida y Vuelta
Tucked away on a quieter corner of the Island, look for the small signs when you leave the ferry to find your way.
Ida y Vuelta is a great island-style hostel with different screened-in palapas serving as the dormitories and private rooms. There are also camping areas available for pitching tents, and hammocks with mosquito nets for rent also. (Plus, three boat-beds that will be available for private sleeping, see photos.) There is a roof over the hammock area, and the entire place is well shaded with trees. Sleeping cheap and comfortable on Isla Holbox is easy here. And the owners, who also live on site, are extremely attentive and helpful. They have put a lot of love and hard work into maintaining and expanding Ida y Vuelta, and it shows.
Wifi, full kitchen, and drinking water are all provided for free. And since August, 2013, there is a new restaurant on site serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And a new bar, as well as new private sleeping quarters, are being constructed as well. If you’re looking for a place where you feel welcomed and can kick back and relax, Ida y Vuelta is it.

Tribu Hostel
For the price – it’s hard to beat Tribu Hostel on any aspect. It’s practically beachfront with just one building separating the beach from the hostel, so you get the nice, almost constant breeze from the water blowing through the patio, open air decks and screened windows. And not only does it have nearly every amenity we look for in a hostel (missing a laundry basin). but the design, staff and overall energy of the place is really enjoyable.
Tribu is an Italian family business, being managed by David. His brother, an engineer, designed the buildings to fit together as if disconnected Lego or puzzle pieces – and the colors are reminiscent of Legos as well.
It’s as colorful as an island hostel can be but has a nice balance of restraint, so it’s not so much in your face. It’s been open since the early spring of 2010,.
At Tribu there is a large kitchen with plenty of storage and cooking space. Drinking water is free, there is a barbeque pit, free wifi, a cinema, bike rentals starting at $15 pesos per hour, a balcony in most of the rooms, a sun deck, and spacious sand patio with hammocks. You can also book tours though Tribu, and are given a map of the Island on arrival. When staying on the island, Tribu hostel is a great option – and the proximity to the beach makes this decision a cinch.

Golden Paradise
Golden Paradise is a slightly more economical option on Isla Holbox. It may not have to vibrancy and all the extras of the other hostels, but at $110 pesos a night in a dorm with only two beds, it’s both quiet and affordable, and the rooms and beds are clean and comfortable. Right now, you don’t get the same crowd here as in other hostels. You’re less likely to meet as many other travelers, but you’re more likely to have a room to yourself.
Located in the center of the island, the mosquitoes can be worse than on the coast. However, all of the dormitories, rooms and common areas are screened in and secure. There is a large yard with several lawn chairs and a hammock under the palapa.
There is also a full kitchen with lots of great seating, and WIFI access. Though there is a toaster, blender, microwave, and coffee pot, the hotplate is on the small side. Still you can get by with making the basics. Bring your own drinking water.
