Hostel Casa Nico
Located a couple blocks from Merida’s main Zocalo, Casa Nico is a large building with plenty of space to relax or socialize, including around the small pool seen above. Dorms here are the cheapest we’ve found. And there are separate dorms for men and women. All rooms have fans, and personable valuables can be stored and locked up at the front desk. The kitchen has it all, drinking water included. In the mornings a breakfast of coffee, fruits, and bread is served starting at 7am. WIFI is available in the lobby and common areas, and in the private rooms on the first floor. The staff here are great: friendly, helpful, and they know the city well.

La Casa Del Tio Rafa
La Casa is a great find. Cozy, comfortable, laid back, and super friendly. Breakfast is offered in the morning, and there is a well-equipped kitchen for guest use. WIFI is available here, and a computer is available to guests as well. There is also a small pool for soaking during hot afternoons, and hammocks for relaxing. Rafa (he exists) is great. A great source of knowledge on where to go and what to do, and great fun to talk to. This is also a smaller hostel, which has a certain appeal, especially when it comes to staying in dorms. There are two 6-bed dorms, and one private room for 1-2 people. And, “The Tank”, which is a simple 1-person circular room built in what once was in fact, a water tank.
PRICES:
Dorm: P$110
Private: P$280
Private for one person (the tank): P$200

El Jardin
Without dorm rooms, El Jardin is a quieter option for those staying in Merida. And for two people the price for a private room is the same as some of the other dorms in town. It’s really a great find. El Jardin is small, with only six rooms, making it perfectly peaceful. The rooms are nicely sized, kept very clean, and there is a wonderful garden area for relaxing. Also a large kitchen is available for guests. WIFI is also free, and the breakfast here was the nicest we’ve seen in town. As is the trend in Merida, the owner and staff go out of their way to be attentive and helpful.

Private room, 1 or 2 people: P$300

Nomadas Hostel
Nomadas Hostel is probably the most famous spot to sleep in Merida, or at least tied with Hostel Zocalo.
Another of the Young and Restless Resort-type hostels, Nomadas Hostel is a great respite from both the heat and the bustling streets of Merida. Nomadas charges more for a dorm bed, but offers more extras as well. The place is huge, with dorms and private rooms spread out over several buildings. There is a kitchen area, and lots of spaces for hanging out or lounging in hammocks, especially around the pool.
Free yoga and salsa lessons are part of the activities. Tours can be scheduled, and bus tickets purchased through the hostel as well. All that’s missing is a restaurant. However, breakfast is included.
Finally, and perhaps most impressive, is the hostel’s pool. While Merida does have a lot of things to see and culture to take in, sometimes mid-day it is just too hot to do anything. A siesta in one of the hammocks suspended over the pool is a perfect way to spend your afternoon.
