Getting // Going : Playa del Carmen

Cancun Airport >> Playa del Carmen

Leaving the international airport, search for the colectivos heading to Cancun and Playa del Carmen. As you’re heading out of the terminal, the shuttles to the various resorts should be right in front of you. If you head to the right, you will find a man selling tickets to both Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The buses leave regularly and  you should be able to catch one without waiting too long. From the airport, it will cost $130MXN to Playa del Carmen and will drop you off at the ADO bus station down by the port. From there, the town is pretty easy to navigate. The roads parallel to the water increase in increments of five, starting with 5th street. From there, a block up is 10th street, another block and you’re on 15th street, etc.

Cancun >> Playa del Carmen

There are essentially three ways to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun. There is an ADO bus that leaves from the bus station and will cost you at least $48MXN. Leaving the bus station, you will see a line of brand-new looking colectivos with Playa del Carmen and Tulum written on the side and front that will cost you $34MXN. Leaving the bus station has just saved you $14MXN, and if you would like to save another $4MXN all you have to do is cross the street. Coming out of the bus station, hang a right and cross the really busy street in front of you (Avenida Cancun-Chetumal). Look for the McDonalds arches or the Comercial Mexicana and head towards the parking lot between them. There you will see more colectivos heading to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. They will drop you off at the colectivo station in Playa del Carmen, located at the corner of 2nd street and 20th avenue. The cost is $30MXN.

Playa del Carmen >> Tulum

To get from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, head towards the colectivo station located at the corner of 2nd street and 20th avenue in Playa del Carmen. The colectivos that will take you to to Tulum line up along 2nd street and will take you from Playa del Carmen to Tulum for $40MXN. You can ask the colectivo driver to drop you off near the ruins or in town, whichever you prefer. You can also take a first-class ADO bus from the bus station down by the port, but it will cost you $66MXN. In our opinion, the extra $2USD just isn’t worth it, particularly for such a short trip.
