One of the positives of visiting Playa del Carmen is that there is an abundance of places to stay, particularly hostels. A downside is the turnover rate for hostels is high. Places close down, and someone new takes over.

As always, some hostels are better than others, so if you get into town earlier in the day it pays to visit a few places before laying down your pack. In Playa you have a couple of hostels closer to the beach, where prices are around $15 USD a night for a dorm bed. Just a few blocks away, and the prices generally drop a few dollars. During “High Season”, MXN$150 is generally the starting price for a dorm bed.

Also, if you are planning on being in Playa del Carmen during Semana Santa/Easter, you will find that prices will be a bit higher than they are listed here and there might not be many vacancies. For the two weeks around the end of the year prices can double, so if you plan on traveling around that time period it’s important to take the fluctuation in rates into account. When two prices are provided, one is for the low season and the other is for the high season.

 

Hostal Vive La Vida

This hostel is a few blocks from the water, but is the best option we’ve seen under MXN$200 for a dorm room. The hostel is clean, bright, and even when crowded, the Male and Female bathrooms have 4 showers and 4 toilets, and the kitchen also has plenty of storage space, and several camp stoves for cooking.  Each dorm has ceiling fans. The lockers are on the smaller side, but you can easily fit your valuables inside. The hostel provides free wi-fi, and there is one computer available for general use. Free coffee is offered in the mornings from 7am-10am.

Tequilita Hostel

Located next door to Hostel Che, Tequilita is often quieter, less crowded, and less expensive that its neighbor. The majority of rooms are located on the floors leading up to the terrace, with the exception of the girls dorm, which is in a separate part of the hostel. There is a small common space inside with a couch and computer. The upstairs offers two terraces, one with a small kitchen for guest use. There is WIFI available and a computer for guest use, as well as drinking water. The lockers are small, just big enough for valuables. Dorms have bathrooms inside. A breakfast of toast and coffee is served in the morning for guests. Towels are given with your sheets, and there is a MXN$50 key deposit.

Hostel Graffiti

In the building formerly occupied by Hostel El Rincon de la Calle 4, Hostel Graffiti is a newer hostel, under new management in 2014. There are lots of small projects and improvements in the works here, though all the rooms are furnished and functional and ready to rent. The ten-bed dorms are mixed gender, and private rooms are located nearby in a separate building. There is a comfy and cozy outdoor common area with plenty of seating, a full kitchen for guest use, and a rooftop terrace. WIFI is available and there is a computer available for guests. Dorm beds start at MXN$150, but it could be worth asking when you arrive, as prices vary depending on the season, and could be lower during off-times. Private rooms either have ceiling fans and private bath, or shared bath and AC. Prices are the same for both types of rooms.
