Hot Dog Connections
Nicaragua is not my pick for best local food flavors in Central America, but The Hot Dogs Connection puts together a pretty good dog. There are tons of gourmet options here including chili dogs, Mediterranean style with capers and even caprese dogs and paninis. At under $2usd for a foot-long with french fries, it’s a good place to get some grub and enjoy a beer.
You can also check out the roasted chicken restaurant in the back of the plaza here. Cheapest beer in town and good rostizado.
El Gordito
This is the perfect place to sit on a hot and hazy, lazy afternoon in Granada. Located in the central square with plenty of trees for shade, it’s no wonder why El Gordito’s food kiosk is the most happening place there. They offer up local dishes like gallo pinto with pork, tajadas (crispy plantains), vigorons and nacatamales as well as fresh juices and licuados — all for cheap prices. The hamburgers are a good deal here, too — if you’re craving something with a little less local flavor.
El Caimito (Chinese)
True to Chinese restaurant reputation, a dinner here can also serve as your breakfast since the portions are enormous. At about $5usd, you can get mixed lo mein noodles or rice (shrimp, chicken, pork — or only one of these, depending on your appetite). And as with most places, you can bring your own beverages in here as well. They even deliver, so if it’s pouring down rain and you’re stuck at your hostel/hotel — call in an order, pick out a movie and enjoy a nice evening in, like we did.
