For a cheaper option in Leon, Siesta Perdida is a good choice. A little rough around the edges, but it’s reflected in the costs — $5 dorms/ $12 private double with private bath — extra person cost $6.

There is wi-fi here, a guest kitchen, laundry basin, pool table and small bar at the front desk.

Tortuga BooludaCentral America Cheap Travel Budget Border Tramp Nicaragua Leon Tortuga Booluda 1

This is our pick for hostels in Leon. A very clean, well-maintained and relaxing place to stay while visiting this old colonial city.

With hammocks strung up throughout the open-air courtyard the rooms are centered around, it is a really beautiful place to relax and read a book or use the free wi-fi. The guest kitchen is one of the better ones you’ll find in Central America.  There is even free coffee on offer all day long — if the pot’s empty, just ask — and complimentary pancakes in the morning.

The front desk sells liters of beer for $2usd/40 cords which you can enjoy while playing pool, cards or any number of board games during a night in.

Compared to the more party-centric Big Foot Hostel, Tortuga Booluda is relaxed, peaceful and a better fit for the easy-going tramper.

Dorms go as the same price as a private double at $7. All the rooms have shared baths so the options are few, but ask to see different rooms for your pick of an optimal bed.
