Gringo Pete’s & Gringo Pete’s Too
Gringo Pete’s and Gringo Pete’s Too is a pair of hostels in La Fortuna under the same management and only a couple of blocks apart. Both are easily accessible from the bus station, and provide guest kitchens, wifi, large lockers, and free coffee all day. At $6USD for a dorm bed, and $7USD per person in a private room, Gringo Pete’s is definitely the best option for lone trampers or those traveling in groups of two. And if they can’t get you in at one of the locations, it’s a quick phone call to determine if there is space at the other.

Chill Out Hostel
Chill Out Hostel, about a five-minute walk from the bus station, is a pretty basic hostel connected to a tour company. If you’re staying in a private room, the hostel provides breakfast vouchers for an extra $5USD/room — a good deal if you’re in a group of three and half price if you’re in a group of two or four. The owner speaks a number of languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Swiss German, and Russian. It’s pretty impressive to watch him work. There are a couple of common areas, though the most popular hang-out spot is in the rocking chairs near the sidewalk — snag one when you can.

Hostel Backpackers La Fortuna // Arenal Hostel Resort
Another pair of hostels under the same management, these two hostels are definitely in the “resort” category. Of the two, Hostel Backpacker La Fortuna is the better deal, and includes full access to Arenal Hostel Resort (including access to the pool). The 4-bed dorms are air-conditioned, roomy, and have attached bathrooms.
At $12USD for a dorm bed and access to the extra facilities at Arenal Hostel Resort, Hostel Backpacker La Fortuna is a decent tramper option. That way, you get full access to the “resort” treatment without shelling out the extra $4USD to stay at Arenal Hostel Resort. Both are located on the main street near the plaza.
