There are plenty of sleeping options in Puntarenas, and the budget options are generally priced about the same: $10USD per person. However, most of them aren’t worth the money. Though there is only one hotel profiled here, it is clean, safe, and a quick walk from most bus stops and the Empresarios Unidos terminal. Our advice? Even though you might only be spending one night in Puntarenas, it is worth the effort to check out a few places before you settle on one. Also, check with Hotel Cabezas first–they have quite a few rooms and they are worth the extra $1-$2.
Hotel Cabezas
This hotel is an oasis of cleanliness and quiet in a sea of dirty, overpriced hotels. The owners are friendly, helpful, and available to let you in at all hours of the night. They offer singles, doubles, triples and one four bed suite all four under $15USD per person. It is a short walk from both the Reina del Campo bus stop and the Empresarios Unidos terminal. Though there is no kitchen, they are right around the corner from some pretty decent (and cheap) restaurants. Also, the wifi signal is excellent — it even reaches to the far end of the hallway — and the layout allows plenty of air to circulate through the rooms keeping them from getting stuffy. Hotel Cabezas is definitely the Border Tramp pick for Puntarenas.
