Copan Ruinas >> San Salvador >> La Libertad (El Tunco, El Zonte, beach towns)
Being that Copan is a bit out of the way in Honduras, it is a little tricky to be efficient in your exit, but hey! that’s what tramping embraces, right?
Ok so you are going to hop on one of the smaller buses headed out of Copan Ruinas to Santa Rosa. It leaves a couple times a day starting at around 7 am (check with the drivers the day before) and the earlier you leave the better, since it will take hours to get to anyplace from here. It will cost you $3usd/60 lemps for this ride.
In Santa Rosa you are going to get on the bus going to Ocotepeque, this is a bigger bus and it will cost $2.50usd/50 lemps. Now remember, like with any bus station in Central America, people will be pushing and pulling you to several different buses — Ocotepeque is the most direct.
In Ocotepeque you will need to take a taxi to the actual border crossing. This should run you about $.75usd/15 lemps per person.
Once you cross the border just walk on up the hill and you’ll come to the bus depot. You should be able to hop right onto a bus to San Salvador that will cost you $1.80usd. (El Salvador uses U.S. dollars). Once in San Salvador you can catch an air conditioned shuttle bus to La Libertad (El Tunco, El Zonte, and other beach towns) for $1.50usd. Just make sure you get to the “Oeste” bus station where this bus departs from.
