“Let’s just walk in and find out the prices,” I said walking through the manicured garden entrance of Horizonte. “It can’t hurt. But, yeah, I’m sure it’s out of budget.”

So the manager showed us some private rooms at Horizonte, at $40usd for a private double, they were way out of our budget. I asked about dorm rooms and she said she had one dorm room empty at the moment.

So we walked up the spiral staircase into the highest room on the property, facing the ocean with nothing but clean, clear open windows between us and the crashing waves. What should have been the penthouse was reserved for us budget travelers. $12 a night with kitchen use? We’ll take it.

The property boasts two swimming pools, one in the garden and one on the balcony overlooking the ocean. There is a decent kitchen with anything you could need. And plenty of hammocks and a big-screen TV if you want to catch up on your sports.

There is no free wi-fi here since El Zonte is not wired for wireless. There is a computer with internet access you can use, if you require it. But El Zonte is really the perfect place to unplug for a bit. Just try it!

Esencia Nativa

Not our top choice for El Zonte, but Esencia Nativa is a clean, relaxed place to take your rest breaks between surf lessons. Hey, there is even a pool here if you get tired of all those 7-footers breaking on your face.

A dorm bed costs $8usd. A private double room runs $20usd, if you want a private bathroom it is $25usd and if you also want A/C it will be $35usd.

If it’s more than just two of you, you can get a private room with private bathroom for $45usd.

There is no kitchen use here, restaurant only.
