Sleeping : San Marcos

Hostal Del Lago

Located off of the main street, and away from the tourist-pathways near the docks, Hostal Del Lago is truly a backpacker’s hostel, and our top pick for San Marcos (unless you need to sleep before 10pm.) They have multiple lodging options, from private rooms to a large dormitory, spread out over a small compound that stretches from the road to the water. Nights here are full of activities, from live music to documentary nights. There is a restaurant on site, and a communal kitchen for guests. Also Spanish classes are offered Monday through Thursday, and drop-ins are always welcome. Yoga classes are also offered on the patio overlooking the water in the mornings. With all that’s going on, and access to the lake and it’s beautiful views, it’s hard to imagine a reason to leave. Oh, and a hearty breakfast comes with your stay.

And it’s a short tuk-tuk ride from the Main Road. If walking, take a right on the main road from the paths. Take the road behind the Catholic Church, and follow that to the hostel.

Hostel San Marcos

Taking the first Left you see leaving the docks, the path winds back and leads you directly into Hostel San Marcos. Hostel San Marcos offers a restaurant with open seating, pizzas, beers, and WIFI access. If you’re looking for a quiet option that’s still affordable, the dorms here are Q50 ($6.50) and include breakfast, which is currently served at Restaurant Fe. You have the option of eggs with toast, oatmeal, or pancakes, served with coffee or tea. And if peace, quiet, and privacy are what you are looking for, Hostel San Marcos is a great option. It’s also in the middle of many restaurants, close to the Nature Reserve, a pretty centralized location for the pathway-section of San Marcos. Also a plus, the dorms here only have 2 beds, which can make sharing accommodations a lot more comfortable.

Hotel Paco Real

Though there are cheaper options for a tramper, the fairy-tale-like bungalows set in a beautiful, lush garden can be a tough deal to pass up as you’re meandering through the pathways of San Marcos. Paco Real is one of the first accommodations you’ll see signs for, and if you end up here, you won’t likely be disappointed. The rooms are all private, though you have the option of shared bath/shower. (The shared shower and bath are in a round building between the rooms and the office/hotel.) The grounds are peaceful, relaxing, and quiet. If you’ve spent any time  recently in accommodations that are more resembling of a jail cell than a hotel (we’ve left these places out of our recommendations) then Paco Real could quite easily feel a lot like paradise. Without a kitchen, or drinking water for quests, Paco Real isn’t the ideal tramper accommodation, but their cheaper rooms fit within a $20/day budget. It’s clean, beautiful, the showers hot, the wifi signal strong, as well as the coffee (Q10), and the food is delicious. Meals are around Q30 and up.
