Eating : Rio Dulce

Street Meat

The action in Rio Dulce is on the main street, where semi-trucks, tuk-tuks, motorcylces and colectivos speed through the crowds of people walking along the sides where there

are no sidewalks. It’s not the most ideal set up for finding good street food, but it’s everywhere, it’s cheap and it’s delicious.

You can get three or four tacos for $1.50usd (12 quetzales). Our favorites were at Los Gemelos, just down the strip from La Bendicion.

You can also get churrascos (taco forms of the giant tortillas de harina) and of course fried chicken.

Even the restaurants and comedors in this town are more or less street meat caliber.

Liters of beer aren’t easy to come by though, but you can find bottles of Brahva for $.90usd ($7 quetzal) or cans of Carta Blanca for $.75usd ($6 quetzal). And you can find a bottle of rum for $5usd (40 quetzales) if you’re really looking to tie one on.

La Bendicion Food from La Bendicion

If you do take a lay over in Rio Dulce you can find a good, filling tortilla de harina at La Bendicion on the main street right before the split to the municipal dock. You can also get a filling breakfast here in the morning for $2.50usd ($20 quetzal). They also have popular fruit licuados for just over $1 if your just looking for something to cool you down — the heat is heavy in Rio Dulce.
