Getting // Going: Merida

Campeche >>> Merida

Getting to Merida second class from Campeche costs P$128. The ride is around 3 hours and buses leave almost hourly, with a few gaps throughout the day. It’s not a bad idea to check in or purchase your ticket the day before.

Merida >> Campeche

From Merida you can get pretty much anywhere first of second class. The second class buses are less frequent in many cases and you may have to fight for a seat, but the price difference can certainly be worth the trouble.

A first-class ADO bus to Campeche cost between P$144-P$200, while a second-class bus costs P$128. The time difference between the two isn’t  significant, with both running over 3 hours. Buses leave at least hourly.

Merida >> Valladolid

For $102 pesos you can get a second class bus from Merida to Valladolid. They leave about every hour, generally on the hour, and the ride takes about two and a half hours.

You can catch the bus at the CAME terminal on Calle 69, between calles 68 and 70. However, the bus stops at the Noreste Bus Terminal on the corner of Calles 67 and 50, so you could check into purchasing a ticket here as well.

Also, on Calle 52, between Calles 63 and 65, there is a taxi terminal with direct colectivos to Valladolid. They run Monday-Saturday, with the first van leaving at 10:30am. After that they should run at least hourly. The price is P$100. Though not a big savings, you are traveling without stopping, in a mini-van instead of a bus. It has it’s perks, if you don’t mind waiting until it fills up to leave.

You may notice people crowding the door to the bus platforms; if you want to ensure a seat, it’s important to get up front. On second-class buses it is not uncommon to oversell the seats, so you may be standing the entire ride — especially if you need to take the time to stow your luggage. And because the bus stops in Chichen Itza along the way, it’s likely the bus population will only grow.
