Rocking J’s
Certainly the most well-known hostel in Puerto Viejo, Rocking J’s occupies nearly two a half acres (1 hectare) about a 20-minute walk from downtown. The compound houses a number of dorm rooms, a couple of camping areas, a “hammock hotel”, a recording studio, a kitchen, and lots of nooks and crannies to decorate with the art supplies available at the front desk. Both camping and hammock options include a large locker as well as a lock. They also rent surfboards, bodyboards, snorkels, guitars and drums. There is a kitchen and wifi, as well as regular bonfires with free marshmallows. Though a bit of a walk from town, Rocking J’s is an affordable option for trampers and a great place to meet other travelers. All reservations are made by phone, though this should only be necessary during the busiest holidays of the year (New Years, Semana Santa, etc.).
